CHAPTER 22

KILO’S MEMOIRS

“Alright now! Hey! Who’s that on the radio? Hey! They sayin’ fuck the police? Yea! Fuck the mutherfuckin’ police! I like that jam right there ladies let me tell ya’! And it has as poignant message for the current generation!”

Lubby and Rolanda were headed over to Lubby’s job to pick up her paycheck on a warm October afternoon in 1989. Lubby, who had moved into a new condo near City Park with Gerald, had picked Rolanda up and had stopped to check on her mother before she left East Shore. Cynthia was glad to see her daughter this day and Lubby was glad that her mother was glad to see her; she was even happier to help her mother out by giving her money to pay her bills. Gerald and Lubby were balling, making money hand over fist. Gerald was making good money hustling and he and Lubby were saving money to open her pet shop. Lubby’s dream had become Gerald’s dream; and because Lubby always had extra money, Cynthia was now nice to her at all times during this period of time. Her friends knew that Lubby was buying her mother’s affection, but what could they say? They got along fine with their parents and Lubby had been shitted on all her life by Cynthia. The girls had talked to Lubby about the situation once and she got mad at them, ending the conversation by telling her girls if that’s what it took to be close to her mother she was fine with the way things were, and anyway, they always had their had mothers in their life. Lubby’s four friends, even though they hated to see her have to buy her mother’s affection, had left the situation alone; although whenever Lubby went to see her mother, one or more of her friends was always there; and if they weren’t around Kilo was on hand.

Lubby was ecstatic this day because she had gotten a kiss on the cheek by her mother after she had given her mother money to pay her light bill. Rolanda was mad at her for doing so; but in Lubby’s mind, isn’t that what children are supposed to do? Take care of their parents whenever they are able? She talked about her mother for a good while as they rode towards Calvin’s parents’ home. Lubby was driving Gerald’s new car, which was a convertible white ’88 Cadillac short dog. The car was clean with an all-white interior and gold Tru rims and vogue tires and a Sony sound system that shook the ground. Kilo sat in the back seat as the girls listened to N.W.A.’s song Fuck Tha’ Police, a song they were getting their kicks off of because N.W.A. was saying what many people felt about the law—fuck ‘em.

Kilo barked the whole ride as the two girls blasted the music. They got over to Gerald’s parents’ house and Rolanda quickly went in to grab a crock pot as Dominique was planning to cook red beans the following Saturday for the friends so they could hang out at her place.
